Frequently asked questions
Below is a short FAQ containing information about joining the team as an editor or in another capacity. Please note that we are looking for dedicated individuals that can spend two to three hours per week on the review.
How are members of the Law Review selected? Editors and other positions are selected from the Birkbeck Law School student body. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to apply. We are primarily looking for students with backgrounds in diverse areas of law that are interested in writing and editing. Alumni applications may be considered on an ad hoc basis, with preference usually given to current students. What other opportunities are available? If you aren’t interested in writing and editing but still wish to help in other aspects of running the journal – we are also interested in taking on dedicated IT, design and marketing staff. If you or anybody you know may be interested in these positions, please let us know. Are there any benefits of working at the journal? There isn't any financial remuneration for working at the review, but staff members can expect to gain a wealth of experience and contacts. You will have the opportunity to review and critique articles written by scholars and law practitioners, sharpening your overall legal knowledge. In addition, you will have an edge in applying for or furthering your employment after you graduate, given most employers recognise the academic value of working at a law review. I have a full-time job; what are the time commitments? As an evening university, we recognize that many of Birkbeck’s students either work or have other commitments during the daytime. As a result we will try our best to ensure that our work is either carried out through e-mail or events in the evening. In addition, most work will be put on hold during exam periods and near essay submission deadlines. However, we do ask that editors are able to commit fifteen hours per month. This sounds like something I am interested in. How do I apply? Please use the Apply Now button above to provide us with a CV that focuses on your legal background and any areas of law you specialise in. Please also include any experience in writing and editing as well as anything else we may find interesting or relevant. Selection will be made on the basis of merit and to ensure a diverse make-up of legal disciplines on the Editorial Board. |
