The Birkbeck Law Review's 2017 conference, entitled 'Law and the City: Exploring the Urban Revolution in Critical Legal Studies' was held at Birkbeck College, University of London, between 15-17th September 2017.
The conference sought to explore and connect law's urban dynamics, and vice versa, the legal dynamics of the urban, addressing a burgeoning literature of critical legal urban studies along with contributions from a range of other disciplines.
Panel discussions included the following topics: poverty in the neoliberal city; land, value and claims; socio-legal approaches to urban inequalities; urban governance, democracy & everyday law; urban law reform; and techniques and legalities of urban control.
The keynote address was given by Mariana Valverde, Professor of Criminology at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law which can be streamed below. A selection of papers presented at the conference form the content of Volume 5, Issue 1 of the Birkbeck Law Review, which can be found here.
