FUNDRAISING 2015 |
IN GRATITUDE,
|
2015's BBKLR conference incorporated fundraising in support of the fantastic work of Calais Migrant Solidarity, who have been working tirelessly on the ground with Calais's migrant and refugee communities for several years. While acknowledging the importance of charitable aid to those enduring the inhumane conditions and police brutality in Calais, solidarity offers something more: facilitated self-organisation, self-education, and dignity.
Calais Migrant Solidarity's current projects include an info point in the main camp (known as 'the jungle'), offering a drop-in service for UK asylum advice, English classes, and a cup of tea; a legal, social and cultural centre (as opposed to the squatted buildings often used so precariously in Calais) in the city that runs French classes for those seeking asylum in France, amongst other important services; and ongoing work documenting evidence of human rights abuses by the French police and supporting people interned in the Coquelles detention center. You can find out more at their website: https://calaismigrantsolidarity.wordpress.com And we managed to raise over £1000! Huge thanks to the donors of our auction and raffle prizes: Chateau Canet, AURZA, Larry Achiampong, International Bar Association, Middle Temple, Hart Publishing, Ashgate Publishing, Deborah Ghate and Georgina Hirsch. |
